I talked with someone yesterday who finally gets it. This client calls me up last week and says, “Hey, with the economy the way it is, I need to drop some of my coverages to save some money.” As usual, I obliged them and agreed to call them this week to take care of dropping their insurance coverages. When I called, the client said, “It’s OK, I changed my mind. I realized that dropping these coverages would just make it harder if something happened so I will be keeping them.” I double-checked to be sure they were comfortable with that decision and hung up with a client who had “thought it through”.
Let’s dig a little deeper on this. Let’s assume he had dropped his Short Term Disability insurance and his accident coverage that covered both he and his wife. Let’s imagine that something happened where one or both of these policies would have paid as they were supposed to but without coverage, they had no help at all other than flying through sick days and vacation time. Let’s say they were out of work long enough to make an impact on their ability to pay their bills. Do you see where I’m going with this? Before they had coverage they saw a gap and they knew they would need help if something happened. They get the policies and feel well insured should anything happen along the way. Now, the economy gets a little tough…maybe a spouse loses a job or something and the household income gets deeply affected. Ask yourself how these people will make it now with the lone breadwinner out with a disability or out due to an accident. Bills do not stop coming and this family…NOW…more than ever needed to wrap themselves in a blanket of protection for their own good and the good of their already struggling family. Without this coverage, the family could be facing bankruptcy or at the very least a LONG uphill battle financially. This happened all because they wanted to save a few bucks by dropping something that could save their family in many ways.
Some of you reading this will ask me, “Well then, what do I do to save those precious dollars?” The answer is very personal to each person and only you can answer what expenses you and your household need to cut back on. I can tell you this…it’s not in the insurance you have. If it mattered enough to get it when the economy was good, how much more needed is it with the economy being less than stellar? Soft drinks? Daily Starbuck’s? Cigarettes? Eating out? Best cell phone package you can buy with all the bells and whistles? Your financial help is right there in front of you. Make some adjustments, but whatever you do…
