When people decide to take out scooter insurance, they may not realise how wide or narrow their insurance coverage really is. Does it cover you for anything? Does it only cover you for injury? These are the things that you need to be most aware of, but sadly, few people realise what they are covered for. Here are a few things that you should be made aware of when you decide to take out scooter insurance.
General Coverage
For the most part, pretty much every insurance provider will provide coverage for the following:
Collision – this simply means that if you run into something on your scooter, you are covered. This is important to have, especially if you were to run into a rather expensive model car, such as a Rolls Royce!
Theft – What happens if your scooter is stolen during the night? What if it’s stolen while you are doing the shopping? Scooter insurance will generally cover you for your loss due to theft.
Vandalism – Having your scooter stolen is bad enough, but what happens if someone damages it and makes it either unusable or the body is damaged? If your scooter is damaged, your premium will usually cover you for things like vandalism.
Uninsured or underinsured drivers – A driver in this category can be one of the most dangerous people on the roads in terms of finance. Many people who drive around in a crappy car think that it’s not worth insuring, so they only get a very basic policy (ie “Third party”, which generally covers only the medical costs for the person they hit). While these drivers may not be worried about their own car, they need to be worried about the damage they cause to the other car they hit. If they hit a Ferrari and it is their fault, they are going to be out of pocket a considerable amount when they have to pay for damages to the Ferrari! So how does this affect the scooter driver? If you are in an accident with an uninsured driver, your insurance provider will pay for your costs, which will then be recouped from the at-fault driver (either through the court or other methods!). This way, you know you will be getting paid the money you are entitled to regardless if the other driver is insured or not.
In general, the above sections you’ll find on most scooter insurance policies. You should always first check with your provider to make sure when, and if they don’t offer one of these, you will need to ask why. However, instead of asking why, you may be better off going somewhere else!
