Specialised Protection in Your Scooter Insurance Policy

By now you are probably aware of the features of your scooter insurance policy. It will (or should) provide even a basic level of coverage that will cover damage to your scooter or the other driver’s car (if you are at fault). It should also provide personal injury protection, both for you and your passenger.

However, you may have certain circumstances where you may require coverage of a more specialised nature. For example, what if you have a vintage 1960s scooter and it gets damaged? Parts may not only be hard to find, but they will likely be more expensive. If you are not careful, your policy may only include basic parts at the lowest possible costs, and may not cover specialised parts.

Here is a list of a few things you may need to consider when shopping around for scooter insurance.

Custom parts and equipment coverage – As mentioned before, there is a core group of scooter enthusiasts that have vintage scooters, or they simply customise their scooters. If these were to get damaged, normal scooter insurance coverage may not cover. For example, what if you have a beautiful airbrushed picture on your scooter and it gets damaged in an accident? Under normal circumstances, customised airbrushing and/or pin striping are not included in basic coverage. However, your policy may include custom parts and equipment coverage (sometimes up to $30000!)

Roadside Assistance – You don’t have to be in an accident or even have your scooter damaged for a good insurance policy to be of great benefit. What if you run out of fuel? What if your battery is flat? What about a flat tire? Generally, changing a flat tire on a scooter isn’t as simple as changing a tire on a car. You may find that your policy (or insurance company) may provide a certain level of roadside assistance that could not only save you a LOT of money, but also a lot of inconvenience. Think about this the next time it is raining heavily and you get a flat tire!

Towing and Labour – if your scooter breaks down, it needs to be taken to a mechanic. This may be many miles away, so towing costs can be exorbitant! As part of you policy, you may have a certain level of coverage that covers you for towing and/or labour costs when your scooter needs repair.

Custom and limited edition coverage – One of the pleasures of owning any vehicle is when you have a model that very few people drive, or the scooter is customised to make it yours, and you know it is the only one like it. If you own a limited edition scooter, you probably paid more than normal. This means that the costs to repair the model will be more expensive. Check your policy to make sure it covers for this. If not, you should get a scooter insurance quote to see how much it will cost.

Kit bike coverage – buying a scooter from a shop is one thing, but some people enjoy actually assembling their scooter from a kit. In addition to being a lot cheaper, it can be a very enjoyable experience that can be shared among friends. However, building your own has a bit of risk (especially of you are not an engineer!). Therefore, if you are trying to insure the scooter you assembled, you need to make sure your policy is valid. Some people have been caught out trying to do things cheap by building their own scooter and getting basic insurance, only to find that their policy doesn’t cover scooters that are built from a kit. Don’t let this happen to you!!! If the basic coverage doesn’t cover kit scooters, pay the extra amount! It won’t be that much, but it will save you a lot of headaches if you are in an accident!

Making sure you have the right coverage, whether you purchase scooter insurance online or directly from a broker, you need to make sure that it provides the right amount of coverage for your circumstances. By paying a little bit extra, you may be able to get specialised coverage that can save you a lot of potential headaches.

You need to ask yourself if you have any special conditions, or if your scooter would be covered in normal circumstances. If you have a limited edition or customised scooter, a normal insurance policy may not cover for damages. Research first and save a lot of headaches in the future!
