We’ve all heard about people insuring things that seem a bit strange. Like their hair, legs, their dog’s house, and more. In the world of insurance, there are so many things to know, like choosing the right policy, understanding your deductible, and more. But what about the wacky side of insurance?
For instance, supermodel Heidi Klum’s legs are insured for $2.2 million dollars. In some way, that makes sense. She’s a woman who makes the bulk of her money (or at least used to) on her looks. If something happened to one of her gorgeous gams, it could potentially hurt her income. Strangely enough, the legs are not insured for $1.1 million dollars each. One (the right) is insured for $1.2 million dollars, while the left is insured for $1 million dollars. The left leg has a tiny scar, thus making it “worth” less.
Along the lines of body part insurance, there are a few more notable policies. Jennifer Lopez was reported a year ago to have a $27 million dollar policy on that famous butt. Now that she’s People Magazine’s Most Beautiful Woman in the World, it is possible that she’s increased the policy. It is also reported that Dolly Parton has a $300,000 dollar policy on each breast, that Ugly Betty’s America Ferrera’s sponsor Aquafresh has a $10,000,000 dollar policy on her teeth, and that Keith Richard took out a $1.6 million dollar policy on his middle finger. Right or left, Keith?
While some of these celebrity policies make little sense, some do. Rod Stewart supposedly has a $6 million dollar policy on his voice. That make sense, because if he can’t sing anymore, what will he do? Lip sync? An English food critic named Egon Ronay insured his taste buds for $400,000 dollars. That way, if the taste buds that are his (pun intended) meal ticket fail him he has a nice payout to support himself.
Record-breaking soccer professional David Beckham has a $151 million dollar insurance policy against any injury that could threaten his career. Because of his injury in March of 2010, who knows if he will be cashing in on that any time soon? It seems that Beckham trained early in 2011 with Tottenham Hotspur and was in talks to play on loan, but that never came to fruition. Additionally, England’s new coach Fabio Capello has said that it might be nice to bring Beckham back for a “farewell” game, but does not intend on tapping him for England in the future. We hope Beckham’s insurance company is ready to make that payout, even though Beckham says he is not anywhere near ready to retire from professional international football.
You don’t have to be famous to insure your favorite body part. It is called “surplus line insurance” and it is not cheap. Specialty insurance has a very high premium, and when you think about it, something pretty awful has to happen to you in order for you to be able to cash in. Perhaps it is better to insure against things like injury and disaster and leave well enough alone.
