Factors to Consider When Choosing Storage Units

You won’t find any shortage of storage units if you’re looking for a place to keep some of your excess items. However, that doesn’t mean all of them will be right for you. There are several important considerations you need to keep in mind when making your decision, including location, access and security.

Location
Convenience is an important factor, of course, because you don’t want to have to drive a long way if you should need to take something out of the facility. For instance, if you run a business and you’re keeping excess inventory at the facility, you will want to make sure it is close by so you or one of your employees can easily get whatever is needed. If you can’t find one close to home, find one close to your work or your child’s school if possible. This is one of the most important considerations for a lot of people, and many of them are willing to pay more for it.

On the other hand, however, you may be able to save a substantial amount of money if you are willing to travel a little farther to get to your items. If, for instance, you’re preparing to travel for a long time and you’ve sold your home, you probably won’t care if you have to go 10 miles instead of five to get your furniture when you buy a new house.

Hours of Access
The more frequently you’ll need to get to your items or business inventory, the more important hours of access will be when choosing among different storage units. Not only are office hours important, gate hours could be even more crucial. As long as you can access the gate, of course, you can access your belongings (many facilities offer 24-hour gate access). If the office is closed, you may have problems getting any questions answered or purchasing packing supplies.

Security
If you have valuable items, whether they are worth a great deal of money or just have a lot of sentimental value, then security will obviously be a huge concern. Gone are the days when the majority of storage units were located in questionable parts of town and were also dirty and dingy. Facilities today are typically not only very nice, but also have 24-hour surveillance as well as guards to keep your items safe. Make sure the one you choose features security cameras installed throughout the facility and gated access that requires pass codes. Each individual unit should also have its own alarm system to provide you with a higher level of peace of mind.

Price
Price is obviously a consideration, but don’t make this your sole reason for choosing one facility over another. There are a lot of other factors that should be just as important. Be on the lookout, though, for any specials or promotions that may provide big savings. This could be the incentive that makes one facility win out over the others.

Storage units can be extremely convenient when you’re running short on space. Just make sure that the ones you’re considering have the features you want.
