A sewer back up is not only disgusting to look at, but it also poses great danger to the environment and your property. The cool thing is that you can prevent the backup from taking place. To prevent it from occurring you need to do the following:
Large Items
Large items such as plastics, paper towels and sanitary napkins usually cause sewer backup. To be on the safe side you should avoid pushing or flushing them in the system. You should also avoid overusing your garbage disposal. This calls for you to avoid pushing a lot of unwanted food products in the disposal. Some of the foods that you need to be wary of are: rice, salad dressing and vegetable pieces.
Cooking Oil
You should avoid pouring cooking oil and other grease based products in your drains or toilet. Cooking oil tends to solidify after cooling thus clogging your sewer line. To be on the safe side you should dispose the oil in a heat-safe container.
Shrubs and Trees
You need to know where your sewer line runs and avoid planting trees and shrubs near it. When looking for moisture, the roots of the trees tend to invade the sewer lines causing cracks. As they continue growing, they cause system backup and even damage to the system.
If you have already planted trees on the sewer line, you should take preventive measures that will prevent the roots of the shrubs and trees from invading the sewer line. The best way of doing this is using a root killer that contains copper sulfate.
Backup Device
There are a number of sewer backflow devices that you can install in your home’s sewer system in order to keep the sewage from backing up into your house when the main sewer blockage takes place.
You should install the device in such a way that it goes on the residential sewer line that connects with your area’s district sewer line. For ideal results you should ensure that the device is installed by a professional.
Other Preventive Measures
There are many other ways in which you can prevent sewer backup from taking place. One of the ways is placing wooden or rubber plugs on your drains before a heavy rainstorm. If you don’t want to keep on installing the plugs before every heavy rains, it’s wise that you install permanent plugs. Again, you should ensure that the plugs are professionally installed.
