In this article, I try to help you find the best angel investors database for you and your business. Too often, I see businesses or entrepreneurs rush into the directory purchasing process without considering different database providers or without thinking about what their particular needs are. As you may notice at the footer of this article, we provide an angel investor database–and it’s a great resource for businesses, start-ups and entrepreneurs–but I do not want to drive you toward my product or any other. Rather, I would like you to make an informed decision before you purchase any database product. Here are a few important considerations to take into account:
- What is the size of investment you are looking for? If you are looking for a $150,000 and above investment in your business then you are probably better off finding a collection of venture capital firms. Angels do sometimes complete large investments in groups but half million dollar and beyond investments are almost always made by professional venture capital firms or private equity firms.
- What is the cost of the directory? If you are paying $700 for a database that only includes a hundred or so angels, maybe you would be better off delegating the responsibility of researching and finding the details of each angel to someone on your team. The cost may be far less and you could contact angels as your researcher finds them so you could potentially only pay for a few dozen hours of work. But it may be more efficient to pay a few hundred dollars for a few hundred investors.
- Where are the angels located? Some directory providers may stack their products with non-U.S. investors. For the majority of the businesses that contact me looking for an angel investor directory, this is not very helpful. On the other hand, you may prefer a more international-focused database if you are based outside the U.S.
