Why “A” Students Will Work for “C” Students

It is happening more and more that the old adages are starting to become less relevant. The idea that in order to be successful you have to travel through school with all “A”s is less true with a greater number of “C” students jumping to the head of the pack and leading the way in all sorts of industries.

There are many reasons for this trend. Here are just a few:

1. C Students Have Generally Struggled – This is not to say that A students haven’t had to work for their grades, but it’s inaccurate to assume that a C student didn’t have to work just as hard for theirs. Everybody has different abilities and aptitudes, and those who excel in school often are better suited to that sort of learning. The C student knows what it’s like to have to work hard just to come up average, so they are able to take that habit for extra effort and transpose it into a real world setting where the skills that lend somebody to test well aren’t as important.

2. C Students Aren’t Locked into Outmoded Thinking – Part of what we learn in school is how things have been done and how they are done now. There is merit to understanding what we consider to be the best approach to a problem. But the C student doesn’t necessarily grasp that, so they are more likely to develop their own methods that may be radically different from the norm. If you don’t understand “how things are done,” you’re much more likely to do them your way which just may be better.

3. C Students Know How to Fail Well – If you’re trying to do something new or different, you’re going to fail a whole lot. A students, while they may be good at things, are not immune to failure. The difference is that they aren’t used to it and don’t necessarily know how to take failure and turn it into success. They may not see a poor grade on one test as an opportunity to learn for the next one and they are much more likely to give up because they are unused to not succeeding. C students are much more adept at handling failure and moving on.

4. C Students Can Accept Less Than Perfect – Not everything is going to be exact every time. While a finely crafted work of art may be beautiful, most people want something functional. The C student understands that there are times when you can just let something be good enough. It’s often better to get something out there rather than wait.
